Creating Web Sites ... Make FrontPage Do Your Bidding

create1.gif (9037 bytes)Oh well, Microsoft is Microsoft.  In their attempt to make the most user friendly possible software they left us out of the loop, and far too often feeling stupid and inadequate and less than a fly spec on their computer screen.  I'm better now.  Are you?

The FrontPage "way" of creating new web sites is very easy and very straight forward .. until you get the first few under your belt and ready to strike out on your own, be inventive, not except the defaults anymore.

Note:  Like, how do you delete all those web sites you don't want anymore??  Open the site in FrontPage Explorer and choose delete FrontPage Web from the [File] menu.  Caution:  There is no recycle bin in FrontPage.

Root Web?

FrontPage by design and default creates a root web you may never see unless you go looking for it and maybe stumble across it.  Then, all webs you create are sub webs of the root web.  My default root web is named "Personal Web."  I didn't create it.  FrontPage did when I installed the program.  The URL is http: //micron.  All other other webs created will be http: //micron/newweb.

To Begin

To begin ... in FrontPage Explorer, from the [File] menu, choose [New], and then FrontPage Web.  Now look very closely at 2, on the dialog box image see the [Change] button.  In the dialog box image you see the FrontPage default, which is the Personal Web Server, mine is called micron ... my laptop,a Micron XKE.   The [Change] button doesn't even begin to look clickable until it's clicked.  While we're here, don't miss the Add to current web check box just to the left of the [OK] button.

AND THEN ... the world is our oyster. What does that really mean? Hmmm? Anyway, at this point we can point to a folder (the awesome web site folder/directory of our choice).  I created a folder for this web site on my D: drive and then pointed the [Change] button there.  Web Design basics does a good job of explaining away the mysteries.  A web site is a collection of html documents / files and image files / documents  contained within a folder/directory that will ultimately be copied to a Web Hosts computer (server).

It's not rocket science, really!!

create2.gif (3465 bytes)This may seem like rocket science to any just embarking upon this web site creation adventure, BUT, it isn't!!  You've been creating files/documents and directories/folders to put them in for a very long time.  You are going to do the same thing for your new web site, assuming that is, that you choose not to accept the FrontPage default.  The FrontPage default is every new site is a sub web of the root web created when you installed the program.

I just elected to create a folder on my computer's hard drive to house my site.  I created the folder first.  I always use "My Computer" icon on the desktop, browse to where I want to create the folder and "create new folder."  In this case, named FrontPage Seminar.

create3.gif (2092 bytes)Or you can merely type a new directory path "d:/" and name "FrontPage Seminar" into the text box and FrontPage will create the directory for you.

Now you are ready to use a wizard or template or go it alone with a one page web.

There is a whole web page in this site devoted to Importing an Existing Web.

Next we'll take a look at the directory/folder structure.  Ready?   Next Page Please.
