FrontPage Components ... Substitution

This one is a treasure.  A little cumbersome to create because the steps follow no logic known to man or Microsoft users in general but a treasure none the less.

Use substitution to file away content that appears on multiple pages in your web site and is subject to change.  In my example I'll use the cities I'm traveling to next week.  See, next week those cities will change?  And, if I placed that little bit of information on every web page in this site, I'd make myself crazy changing them, wouldn't I?

substu1.gif (7900 bytes)Here goes...

  1. Go to FrontPage Explorer, choose [Tools] [Web Settings] and the Parameters tab on that dialog box >>>>>>>>

  2. Next, choose [Add], give the parameter a name and fill in the value.

  3. Back to FrontPage Editor, get to the place on your page where you want the Parameter Value to appear and choose [Insert] [FrontPage Component] and then substitution.  Type in the name of the Parameter Value and wala it magically appears.

substu3.gif (1897 bytes)Cities I will be traveling to and presenting seminars in next week are:  (Here's where I perform step 3.)  FrontPage Editor [Insert] [FrontPage Component] and then substitution ... type in the name of the parameter value and ... Houston, Austin, San Antonio & El Paso, TX; Tulsa, Oklahoma City, OK; Dallas TX; Little Rock, AK are inserted.

Next week, I only have to [Modify] to change the cities for that NEXT week.  Yes that is where I'll be next week.
